John Givens - Vice Mayor

Vice-Mayor Givens has been a fixture on Salem’s City Council since 1995 serving the city in almost every conceivable capacity.
In his 13 plus years on Council, Givens has served on the audit-finance committee, the Roanoke College-Salem Task Force, Salem’s VDOT committee, the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission and the Salem Educational Foundation. Recently he was inducted into the Educational Foundation’s Hall of Fame.

The Salem native and Andrew Lewis graduate played on a state championship basketball team for the Wolverines, and then later went on to play football at Virginia Tech under head coach Jerry Claiborne.  Givens graduated from the university with a degree in business marketing and he also was a member of Virginia Tech’s Honors business fraternity.

Since 1976, John has worked for the family business, Givens Lumber, becoming President of the company in 1987, and since 2003 he has been the owner of Givens Professional Home Inspections.

John and his wife, Tricia, are active members of Salem’s First United Methodist Church.  He has served on various building and fund raising committees and been a member of the same Sunday school class for 30 years, while his wife is the Children’s ministry and children’s choir director.
John and Tricia have two daughters Ashley and Chandler.  Ashley is married to Dr. Griffin Cross and they have three sons.  Chandler is married to Matthew Kwarta and they have a daughter, Madelyn.
