Announcements

Our "49ers Plus" Club is currently selling granite stones in honor of OR in memory of loved ones. At this time, the first ordered granite stones are being put in place along our "Memory Walkway" on the Union Street side of the Senior Center. A dedication will be planned after everything, including landscaping, is complete.  Sales of the stones is an ongoing project and forms are available at the Senior Center.  A new flag pole is to be installed displaying the Virginia State and the United States flags.  Also, we have two new Salem wrought iron benches to be placed in the area. If you would like more information please feel free to give us a call at 375-3054.

Regular Classes - 2010

Class Fees:

There is no fee for Bridge, Ballroom, Line or Tap dance, T-Th-F Exercise, Canasta or other card playing. Tai chi is $2/person/session. A suggested amount of $5/person/month is given to Norma Harris for quilting and needlework. Materials fees are the cost for chair caning, basket weaving and ceramics, bowling, and guitar.

*Call the senior center if you have any questions. Please feel free to visit and observe any classes you would like before deciding to participate.

9:00 a.m. - Noon - Intermediate Bridge - Lois Hurdle, Coordinator. Call Lois at 389-6794 or the Senior Center if you would like to play.

10:00 a.m. - Quilting with Norma Harris

10:30 a.m. - Noon - Bowling, Lee Hi Lanes, $1.90 per game. Shoes and ball are free.(Begins January 26th)

12:30 p.m. - Senior Mountain Pickers

1:00 - 4:30 p.m. - Bob Ross Oil Painting Classes, 2nd Monday of the month

February 8th - "Fishing Village"

March 8th - "Moon Shine"

April 12th - "Tuscan Manor"

May 10th - "Magnolias On Black"

9:00 a.m.- Exercise with Sherry Stinson, NETA, AFAA, and CPR Certified. Dress comfortably, bring your enthusiasm! Remember you should consult your physician before beginning this or any exercise program.

10:00 a.m. - Noon & 12:30 - 2 p.m. - Chair Caning & Basket Weaving

Work on chairs and baskets of your choice, materials are ordered weekly through the center

TOPS - Salem Chapter for Take Pounds Off Sensibly - Tuesdays weekly - 5:45 p.m.

49ers Plus Club -  1st & 3rd Thursdays - 11:00 a.m., Eat lunch out the 2nd week at various restaurants. They also preside at our Monthly Luncheons. This is a group that meets for fun. They make donations to organizations such as the Salem Rescue Squad and the American Red Cross.

Twined Hearts Garden Club - 3rd Tuesday of each month - 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Italian Descendants - 2nd Sunday of each month - 3:00 - 6:30 p.m.

Roanoke Dance - (All levels of Ballroom Dance and variations) - 4:00 - 6:30 p.m.
Winter/Spring 2010 Meeting Dates: January 24th, February 28th, March 28th, April 25th, May 23rd Location: Salem Senior Center, Come join in the fun!

Bridge Luncheon - Fourth Tuesday of each month - 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Bring a bag lunch, drinks will be available. 

Monthly Luncheon - A "pot luck" meal is held on the last Thursday of each month at noon. A special program follows the meal.  This is a great time to see many of our regular participants and for friends to visit!! The program concludes around 1:30 - 2:00 p.m.

"Senior Mountain Pickers" - (formerly "Boone's Picker") now meet at the Senior Center, Mondays 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. and Fridays 10:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Come play along, sing and dance or just sit around and enjoy the variety of country, gospel, and bluegrass that is played.


"Salem Senior Singers"  - rehearse 1st Thursday of each month at 12:30 p.m. The group sings regularly for Our Lady of the Valley on the 2nd Tuesday of each month and for Snyder Nursing Home on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Other requests are received and scheduled as possible. you are welcome to come and sing with this group anytime.

AARP's Mature Driving Course will be offered in the Spring. Dates are not confirmed at this time.  Call the Senior Center if you are interested. The class will meet twice, 4 hours each day, and has a $10 material fee.

Special Events, Trips and Outings

The Senior Center's 23-passenger van is proving to be comfortable and fun to travel in. We would love for you to join us for our next trip.

We are ready to travel again with some exciting new trips. There are some changes and we hope it makes traveling easier for you. ALL TRIPS will leave from the Salem Civic Center parking lot East side near the tennis courts (1001 Roanoke Blvd.) where there are plenty of parking spaces and we will all be together. We hope the places we have chosen will be of interest to you and possibly some locations you have never visited before.  We will keep you up to date with any changes or additions to the schedule.


DAY TRIP INFORMATION FOR 2010

All day trips must be paid in full upon registration
- Payments must be made by cash or check made payable to the city of Salem  (unless    otherwise stated)
- Cancellations may be made up to one week prior to departure with a full refund if a replacement can be made. Failure to fill the vacancy will result in a forfeiture of all non-refundable payments. (unless otherwise stated)
- ANY cancellations made within one week prior to the trip will result in forfeiture of all non-refundable payments.
- All participants must complete and sing a travel participant waiver form for EACH trip.
- Trips lacking ample number of participants will be canceled in advance of payment deadlines and full refunds will be given
- Full itineraries and agendas are available at the Salem Senior Center

OVERNIGHT TRIP INFORMATION FOR 2010

- All overnight trips must be paid by deposit or in full upon registration
- Payments may be make by check or money order to the City of Salem (unless otherwise stated)
- ALL cancellations for overnight trips must be made thirty (30) days out in order to receive a full refund. 
- ALL non-refundable payments will be forfeited cancellations are within thirty (30) days of departure if a replacement is not available
- Payments made payable to the City of Salem will be refunded by the City of Salem ONLY. Organizations/Businesses receiving payment/deposits are responsible for processing refunds.
- All participants must sign  a participant waiver form prior to each trip.
- Full itineraries and agendas are available at the Salem Senior Center.

Friday, February 12th - Star City Playhouse, "Awake and Sing", Cost: $12, includes ticket and transportation. An extended Bronx family is crammed in an apartment during the depression. Deals with love, money worries, loss of status and ambition before they can Awake and Sing. Broadway's best of 1937. Sound familiar? Dinner on your own at Harbor Inn Seafood.
Departure Time: 4 p.m.

March 10th - 12th (Wednesday - Friday) - Savannah, Georgia, Cost: $299 per person, includes 2 nights hotel accommodations, 2 breakfasts, 2 dinners (one at Lady & Son's Restaurant), a guided tour of Savannah and a performance at the Savannah Historic Theater, which produces wonderful live musical shows such as "Hooray for Hollywood', "The Beat Goes On", and the all time favorite "Return to the 50's". We will also shop along the famous River Street.

Thursday, March 18th - Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre's "The Sound of Music", Come be captivated by Maria as she leaves the convent to become governess to Captain Von Trapp's 7 children, who come to love her after she introduces them to the joy of music, as Maria and the Captain begin to fall in love. Witness the struggle of romance in 1938, Austria.
Cost: $55, Departure Time: 10 a.m.

Thursday, April 1st - Come join us for a fun-filled day shopping at Ponnie's in Shawsville, then it's on to Magic Mart (much like Value City) and Peebles in Pulaski. We travel back down the mountain to the delicious Mountain View Italian Kitchen in Ironto. Dinner is on your own.
Transportation: $7, Departure Time: 11 a.m.

Thursday, April 8th - Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre's "The Sound of Music"
Cost: $55, Departure Time: 10 a.m.

Thursday, April 20th - "Ring of Fire", Barn Dinner Theatre, Greensboro, NC, From the heart of the songs of Johnny Cash comes a unique musical show about the love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, home and family. The show features many of the music legend's songs such as "Country Boy", "A Thing Called Love", "Five Feet High and Rising", "I Walk the Line", "Hurt", "Daddy Sang Bass", and "I've Been Everywhere". Don't miss this massive tribute the the man in black, featuring the Barn Band Live.
Cost: $58, Departure Time: 9 a.m.

Saturday, May 1st - Star City Playhouse, "Grave Concerns", Cost: $12 - includes tickets and transportation. The director has died and a devoted little acting company at the Praline Playhouse plans his spectacular send off. Between a coffin dance, a mangled Master Builder, and a rapacious Mayor who lusts to tear down the theatre for a parking lot. The director is probably better off at this new " Theatre in the Sky". Dinner at the Golden Corral is on your own.
Departure Time: 4:30 p.m.

May 11th - 13th (Tuesday - Thursday) - Smokey Mountains "Show Trip", Motorcoach transportation, 2 nights lodging, 4 meals (2 breakfasts and 2 dinners), We will attend 2 evening shows: The Comedy Barn and Black Bear Jamboree, and 2 morning shows: Patty Waszak Morning Show and Blackwood Breakfast Variety Show. Free time in Historic Downtown Gatlinburg and much more.
Cost: $275 per person, Departure Time: 8 a.m.

Wednesday, June 16th - Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre, "Showboat", Winchester, VA, More information coming soon.

General Information

On Fridays, we frequently make outings in our van, to local malls, shops and restaurants, as well as out of town destinations such as River Ridge Mall in Lynchburg and the Fort Chiswell Outlet Mall.

The monthly newsletter is available with a current calendar of events, you may pick it up or call and have it mailed.

*In the event of inclement weather, when Salem City Schools are closed, all activities are cancelled for the day.
