Regular Classes - 2012

Class Fees:

There is no fee for Bridge, Ballroom, Line or Tap dance, T-Th-F Exercise, Canasta or other card playing. Tai chi is $2/person/session. An amount of $5/person/month is given to Norma Harris for quilting and needlework. Materials fees are the cost for chair caning, basket weaving, ceramics, bowling, and guitar.

*Call the senior center if you have any questions. Please feel free to visit and observe any classes you would like before deciding to participate.

MONDAYS

9:00 a.m. - Noon - Intermediate Bridge - Lois Hurdle, Coordinator. Call Lois at 389-6794 or the Senior Center if you would like to play.

12:30 p.m. - Senior Mountain Pickers

12:30 p.m. - Painting with Phyl (second Monday of the month)

7:00 - 9:00 p.m. - Cole Bluegrass Show (first Monday of the month)

TUESDAYS

9:00 a.m.- Exercise. Dress comfortably, bring your enthusiasm! Remember you should consult your physician before beginning this or any exercise program.

10:00 a.m. - Chair Caning & Basket Weaving

Instructor: Gene Bennett

Work on chairs and baskets of your choice, materials are ordered weekly through the center.

10:30 a.m. - Tai-Chi at College Lutheran Church

1:30 p.m. - Computer Tips with Tammy

2:00 p.m. - Ballroom Dance

Ballroom Dance held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, Tea Dances are held on the 2nd and 4thTuesdays. The Tea Dances are more a social setting with people bring snacks to share.

2:00 - 3:00 p.m. - Cooking Class at Salem Harrogate (first Tuesday of the month)

10:00 a.m. - Noon - General Ceramics

We travel to Annie's Ceramics in Blue Ridge, usually on the 1st Wednesday of the month for supplies

10:00 a.m. - Needlework

Come learn to knit, crochet or any other needlework projects you are interested in.
$5/per person/per month

 Regular Meetings

 THE BOB ROSS METHOD OF OIL PAINTING CLASSES WITH PHYL. Classes are on the second Monday afternoon: 1 - 4:30 p.m., Samples are available at the Senior Center. Cost is $40; you need to sign up if you wish to attend.

"49ers Plus" Club -  1st & 3rd Thursdays - 11:00 a.m., Eat lunch out the 2nd week at various restaurants. They also preside at our Monthly Luncheons. This is a group that meets for fun. They make donations to organizations such as the Salem Rescue Squad and the American Red Cross.

Monthly "Pot Luck" Luncheon - These luncheons are always a fun, well-attended event with a program that follows the meal.  They are held on the last Thursday of each month. Participants are asked to bring a dish that serves 6 - 8 people.

Ballroom Dance Class meets in the form of "Tea Dances".  This is at the regular time, 2 - 4 p.m. with taped music provided. Thee is no fee, you are asked to bring a snack food to share.

"Salem Senior Singers"  - rehearse 1st Thursday of each month at 12:30 p.m. The group sings regularly for Snyder Nursing Home. Other requests are received and scheduled as possible. Everyone is welcome to come and sing with this group anytime.

"Senior Mountain Pickers" -  This is a group of musicians (string instruments) who play informally on Mondays at 12:30 and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. at the Senior Center. Come play along, sing and dance or join the audience of 50+. This group is really GREAT!!

"Special Friday Events" - provided through each month.  We frequently make outings in our van to local malls, shops and restaurants, as well as Bingo, Wii, crafts, parties, etc.  *A small fee may apply for some of these events; please call the Senior Center for more information..

Monthly Newsletter - This consists of a calendar and news of the Senior Center activities and outings.  They will be distributed at the Monthly Luncheons, for the following month.  Please stop by and pick on up so you can join us at the Senior Center.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2012 - Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre, "Always - Patsy Cline"
Back by popular demand Patsy Cline is the true story of Patsy and her biggest fan, Louise who corresponded for years in letters that were all signed "Always" Patsy Cline.  Told from  Louise's kitchen table, full of down home country humor and unforgettable hits, this tribute to Patsy gives her original fans the chance to reminisce, while introducing new fans to the legendary singer who was taken from us too soon.

MONDAY, APRIL 30 - THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2012 - Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Staying at the Park Grove Inn Includes 3 Deluxe Continental Breakfasts, Hatfield's and McCoy's Dinner Theatre, Smith Family Dinner Theatre, Dollywood, dinner at Tony Roma's and the Smoky Mountain Opry.  Parrot Mountain to see hundreds of different Parrots in the beautiful garden setting.  Shopping at the Tanger Outlet. Lunch each day is not included

THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2012 - Wolfhahrt Haus Dinner Theatre, We will be seeing the production of "Oklahoma", the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys paints the backdrop against which Curly & Laurey play out their love story.  Beginning a new life together in a brand new state. It provides the ultimate climax to this Rogers & Hammerstein Classic "Best Musical of  the 20th century", say the New York Drama League

DAY TRIP INFORMATION FOR 2012

All day trips must be paid in full upon registration
- Payments must be made by cash or check made payable to the city of Salem (unless otherwise stated)
- Cancellations may be made up to one week prior to departure with a full refund if a replacement can be made. Failure to fill the vacancy will result in a forfeiture of all non-refundable payments. (unless otherwise stated)
- ANY cancellations made within one week prior to the trip will result in forfeiture of all non-refundable payments.
- All participants must complete and sing a travel participant waiver form for EACH trip.
- Trips lacking ample number of participants will be canceled in advance of payment deadlines and full refunds will be given
- Full itineraries and agendas are available at the Salem Senior Center

OVERNIGHT TRIP INFORMATION FOR 2012

- All overnight trips must be paid by deposit or in full upon registration
- Payments may be make by check or money order to the City of Salem (unless otherwise stated)
- ALL cancellations for overnight trips must be made thirty (30) days out in order to receive a full refund. 
- ALL non-refundable payments will be forfeited cancellations are within thirty (30) days of departure if a replacement is not available
- Payments made payable to the City of Salem will be refunded by the City of Salem ONLY. Organizations/Businesses receiving payment/deposits are responsible for processing refunds.
- All participants must sign  a participant waiver form prior to each trip.
- Full itineraries and agendas are available at the Salem Senior Center.

General Information

On Fridays, we frequently make outings in our van, to local malls, shops and restaurants, as well as out of town destinations such as River Ridge Mall in Lynchburg and the Fort Chiswell Outlet Mall.

*In the event of inclement weather, when Salem City Schools are closed, all activities are cancelled for the day.
